Uncoupling, an insider’s guide to separation in New Zealand

How do you tell your partner you want to separate?

by | Apr 22, 2022

If there is no other way, you have one or more difficult conversations ahead. Even if you are both unhappy in the relationship, the one hearing the announcement will be shocked – this will be actual shock. There will likely be tears and accusations. How you behave in this period may dictate the mood of your entire separation process.
Being the person making the announcement can be just as hard as being the person hearing it. It’s tough whether witnessing or experiencing strong emotions. If you are the one who initiates the conversation, be understanding of your partner’s reaction. If you are the one hearing it, understand this is not a decision your partner has taken lightly.
Find out how to have a difficult conversation with your partner in my book, Uncoupling, an insider’s guide to separation in New Zealand.
