Uncoupling, an insider’s guide to separation in New Zealand

Consciously communicating better with your ex

Think about it. The chance that anything will change by rehashing old issues or engaging in emotive conversations is small. Your best chance, whatever side of the break-up you are on, is to be business-like and professional in your communications.

It’s so easy to revert to old habits. Without meaning to, you can easily slip into emotive or blaming language so read every text, every email, in fact everything you write, before sending.

When I was working through this process, I occasionally asked a close friend – and sometimes my lawyer – to read what I had written to make sure nothing untoward had slipped in without me noticing! It was a truly worthwhile step, preventing escalation of conflict.
